Dear Parents,
The story of the week is Jamaica Tag Along. There are Vocabulary Words this week.
Valentine's Day is Tuesday, February 14. This is a FREE DRESS day, wear Red, White or Pink. We are going to Cherish this day to sing some songs. The Valentine's Day party will be in the afternoon. Please have your child bring in their Valentines for exchange. Make sure everyone gets a Valentine. Remember there is NO SCHOOL on Friday, February 17 or Monday, February 20.
Can you believe that First Communion is only 9 weeks away. I will be sending home some pamphlets, 1(one) every week. These pamphlets focus on specific First Communion topics. Please read them with your child.
Lent begins on Wednesday, February 22. I know that everyone usually gives something up as a sacrifice. These sacrifices are sometimes like a New Year's resolution we do them for a while. I would like to make a suggestion. As a family try to attend Mass every Saturday or Sunday. This would be a good way to prepare for your child's First Communion. Parents are the primary educators of their children and attending Mass as a family will show your child that God is important in your life as well as in theirs.
First Communion is on April 21, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church.

Dear Parents,
Thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to drive students to OLM after the Mass on Friday. Catholic School's week was busy. I know the students had a good time. Especially on Buddy Day. We will continue reading The Littles this week. We will finish reading the book on Friday. There are Spelling Words this week.
Progress Reports go home on Friday. Just a reminder. The grades on the Progress Reports are not the final grades for the 3rd Quarter. The Progress Reports are to let the parents know what the grades are at the present time. If some of the grades are a little low then your child has some time to raise them before the Report Cards go out. Please talk to your child about this.
International Night is Tuesday, Februay 7, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Mrs. Abbate came into the classroom on Thursday and spoke to the students about the Marshall Islands. You should be very proud of your child because they really knew a lot about their topic that they wrote about. I know I was proud of the students.
FREE DRESS on Monday, February 6. Wear Mardi Gras colors, PURPLE, YELLOW,GREEN,GOLD. Remember the Auction on Saturday, February 11 at St. Patrick's Parish Hall. Always a fun time.
On February 14, Valentine's Day the 2nd Graders are going to Cherish to sing some songs. I will be contacting those parents who volunteered to drive. Valentine's Day is a FREE DRESS day. Wear Red, White, or Pink.

Dear Parents,
Happy Catholic School's Week 2012. First of all NO HOT LUNCH ON TUESDAY, January 31 or Wednesday, February 1. BUDDY DAY IS TUESDAY. Remember a small gift for your Buddy. Do Not spend a lot of money, $2.00 or less. TUESDAY IS FREE DRESS. BLUE AND WHITE DAY. WEAR YOUR SCHOOL COLORS. Wednesday is the Cherish Luncheon. The 2nd Grade class will be singing a song as part of the entertainment.
The class will be reading THE LITTLES chapter book this week. While your child is reading the assigned chapter at home please make sure that he/she understands what has been read. I will have comprehension questions written on the chalk board for them to answer every morning.
There are no Spelling Words this week.
The Marshall Islands report is due February 1, 2012.

Dear Parents,
The story for the week is Angel Child,Dragon Child. Homework for Monday is read the story, Vocabulary definitions and Spelling, 5 times each. Tuesday Spelling homework is ABC order, Wednesday choose 8 spelling words and write Dictionary definitions, and Thursday is write sentences for each Spelling word.
When your child has Math homework please check it and have your child correct the errors. On one of the Math homework pages for last week everyone in the class had errors. We went over the Math paper together. They asked questions and we talked about the problems.
Catholic School's Week begins Sunday, January 29th. Lots of activities are planned for the week. We will end the week with an all school Mass at St. Patrick's Church on Friday, February 3rd at 8:15 a.m. A permission slip will be sent home this week. Your child will be dropped off at the church and will return to school by private car around 10:00 a.m.
Remember your Marshall Islands report is due February 1st. Please have your child use his/her best handwriting.

Dear Parents,
I hope your weekend is going well. Please remember to sign and return the Report Card and the SLE form. The story for the week is Puff. Flash, Bang. I skipped over Best Wishes ,Ed. Puff, Flash, Bang is a long story and we need the extra day to read it. We will read Best Wishes, Ed next week.
The homework for Monday is read Puff, Flash,Bang, Vocabulary definitions and Spelling Words 5 times. There will also be Math homework. Remember Wednesday is a Math test on Chapter 5. I hope everyone is going over the math papers that were sent home. I want everyone to do well on the test. Please remind your child to take his/her time and to go over their test before handing it in. It is not a times test.
Remember next Monday there is NO SCHOOL. We have a day off in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
Starting January 29, 2012 is Catholic School's Week. Lots of activities happening during this week. A note will be sent home. Second Grade will be entertaining during the Cherish luncheon on Wednesday, February 1st.

Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! Happy 2012! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas vacation. My vacation was real nice. I spent time with my family. Always a fun time. But now it is back to school.
The story for the week is Dear Daddy. The homework for Tuesday will consist of reading Dear Daddy and the Small Reader along with the Vocabulary definitions. I am sending the Small Reader home on
Tuesday so the students do not have to read the Small Reader on Friday for homework. The Spelling homework for the week is 5 times on Tuesday, ABC order on Wednesday and Spelling sentences on Thursday.
The students will begin Cursive writing on Monday, January 9th. There will be a Math Chapter 5 Test on Wednesday, January 11. I will be sending home completed Math papers so your child can begin to study for the Test.
Dismissal for Friday is 12:30 p.m.
Report Cards go home on Friday. Two Quarters of the school year have been completed. We are into the Third Quarter now. Please stress to your child the importance of their Conduct and Effort grade. The Second Quarter of school was not very good for some of the Second Graders because their Conduct grade dropped. Some of the students that were on the Honor Roll the First Quarter will not be on the Honor Roll the Second Quarter. Again, please stress to your child of the importance of paying attention in the classroom and when outside to Yard Duty and other Teachers and Adults. Some of the students feel they do not have to pay attention to anyone. Whenever one of my students gets into trouble or causes any trouble I hear about it. Thank you for your cooperation.

Dear Parents,
Welcome to the last week of school before Christmas vacation.
The class will be working on a Reading Assessment on Monday, Tuesday, and will finish up on Wednesday. The Reading Asssessment is an important part of their Reading grade. Spelling words this week but no Vocabulary words.
On Thursday, December 15 the Second graders are going to Day Out. I talked to the Director of Day Out and she is excited about the class going out for a visit. If you have not sent in your child's permission slip, please do so by Wednesday, December 14. If I do not have a permission slip I can not take your child off campus. Thank you.
The end of the Second Quarter is December 16. Report Cards will go out on January 6,2012.
Some of the grades, especially in Conduct and Effort have dropped due to the talking and the issues at lunch recess. Mrs. Blackburn had to come in after lunch recess last week and talk to the students because some of the students told the yard duty helper that they did not have to listen to her. Yard duty has had to have them sit out a few minutes at lunch time because of the horsing around and the excessive talking when she was trying to talk to them. There has been arguing among the boys over soccer and kickball games.
Every year the Second graders write a letter to an Elf. They do not ask for gifts. They can only ask questions. While reading the Elf letters I came across some not so nice questions that some of the boys were asking their Elf. I questioned the boys and they said they did it because they thought it was funny. Mrs. Blackburn knows about the unkind questions. This incident is going to lower their Conduct grade.
Please talk to your child about having respect for adults. I talked to the students. I told them that Yard duty is out for their protection and they should listen to them.

Dear Parents,
Just to let you know, Fr. Pat was impressed by the Second Graders at the Penance service last Tuesday. He said that they were prepared and knew what to say. They all knew their Act Of Contrition. Good Job.
The story for the week is Swimmy. This is our last story in the Level 6 Reader. Next week the students will have a Reading Assessment. After Christmas break they will begin to read out of the Level 7 Reader. The Homework for Monday will be the Vocabulary definitions, Spelling and read Swimmy.
Whenever your child is absent from school please have your child complete the Spelling homework for the day that was missed from school. Just because your child is absent from school that does not excuse him/her from doing the Spelling homework. The Spelling homework is the same every week. The only time I change the Spelling homework is when there is a short week of school.
The end of the Second Quarter of school is December 16. Report Cards will go out when we come back to school after the Christmas break.
Please talk to your child about how they should act in the classroom. Lately some of the children have been acting silly,(while at their desk and at the rug), doing a lot of talking, (when they should be working), and racing to get their work done so they can be the first to put their paper in the tray. They will actually run over to the trays to be the first. I have talked to them and have written notes in some Planners about the behavior. Thank you for your help.

Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and a relaxing week. I certainly enjoyed my time off.
On Tuesday, November 29, at 7:00 p.m. is the First Penance Prayer service at St. Patrick's church.
I am sending a note home on Monday reminding everyone of the time and some instructions for parents.
This is an important step in your child's Catholic faith. We have been practicing what to do and what to say to the Priest. I know they will be ready for this important event.
The story for the week is Henry's Wrong Turn. Vocabulary definitions and Spelling words 5 times each is the homework for Monday. Chapter 4 Math test is on Tuesday.
On Friday, December 2, is 12:30 dismissal.

Dear Parents,
Welcome to the week before Thanksgiving. Where did the time go!
The story for the week is The Goat in the Rug. There are Vocabulary words and Spelling words this week. There will be a Math test on Chapter 4 on Tuesday, November 29. I will be sending home completed Math papers so your child can study. Please take the time to help your child study for the test. Some of the children are still have some trouble understanding the regrouping concept. Thank you for your help.
Please attend the meeting on Wednesday, November 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. Fr. Pat always has some wonderful words of wisdom.
Progress Reports go home on Friday, November 18th. REMEMBER these are Progress Reports. These are not your child's Final Grades, there is still room for improvement.
First Penance is on Tuesday, November 29 at 7:00 p.m.
On Friday, November 18 at 8:15 a.m. the school is having a Thanksgiving Prayer Service. If you have some free time please join us.

Dear Parents,
I hope you had fun at the Halloween Carnival on Saturday night. What a pleasant evening. I had a good time taking my grandchildren around to the different booths. Remember to have your child wear their Halloween costume on Monday.
The story for the week is The Mysterious Tadpole. There are vocabulary words and spelling words. I will allow some time during the day so your child can start his homework. If he/she can focus and not do too much talking the homework might get done.
On November 9th your child will perform in the Thanksgiving program. We have been practicing a dance and a song.
Continue working on the Act Of Contrition. On November 29 is your child's First Penance. On Wedneday, November 16th at 6:30 p.m. Fr. Pat will give a talk on receiving First Penance and the importance of the parent's role in the continuing Catholic education of their children. Please make it a point to attend this meeting. Dear Parents,
Lots going on this week. Conferences, Red Ribbon Week and the Book Fair. Monday for Red Ribbon week is Crazy Hair, Crazy Socks, Crazy Hats, and Sunglasses. Tuesday, 2nd Grade will play basketball with 5th Grade. Wednesday, FREE DRESS, wear your jeans with a red/white shirt. Thursday, partner read with a class, and Friday, I Rock Drug Free.
We will not have a story for the week. We will be reading a Chapter book. Every night for homework a chapter will be read and Comprehension questions will be answered. No Spelling Words this week.
Remember the Chapter 2 Math Test is on Tuesday.
The Second Grade class is in the Thanksgiving program. The entertainment will be singing a song and square dancing. The Program is on November 9th. I will send a note home to remind everyone when the day gets closer.

Dear Parents,
Welcome to the 2nd Quarter of school. Report Cards go home on Friday, October 21.
On Wednesday, October 19 is Pink Free Dress Day for $1.00. Everyone should wear pink on this day. The class with the most pink will have a free dress day the following week. Also on Wednesday is the Mother-Daughter Volley ball game. This sounds like a fun evening.
The story for the week is Wednesday Surprise. Please try to have your child read the story aloud to you. The more your child reads the more fluent his/her reading will get. When your child brings home the Small Readers please have him/her read the stories. Too many times students will come to school and tell me that they did not have any time to read the story. Please make the time to read.
When your child has Math homework, please check to see if the problems are done correctly. I have checked some Math homework papers with several wrong answers. Please be sure and check your child's Math homework. Thank you.

Dear Parents,
Welcome to the last week of the First Quarter of 2011-2012 school year. Report Cards go home on Friday October 21st.
The story for the week is Nine in One Grr, Grr. Please be sure and have your child read aloud at home. There are several students who read very slow, very quietly and with no expression. They also skip right past the period at the end of a sentence. While they are reading have them look at each word and read each word.
Every Thursday during the month of October the whole school prays the Rosary after Flag salute. If you have some time join us.
During Conference week October 24 through October 28 the Library is having a Book Fair. There is always lots of good books. Also during Conference week is Red Ribbon Week. There are some activities planned for the week.

Dear Parents,
Sorry for the late blog. The story for the week is Willie's Not The Hugging Kind. The Spelling homework for the week is the same. There will be a mass of the Feast of St. Francis at l:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Blessing of the pets will be after the Mass. Dismissal on Friday, October 7 is at l2:30 p.m.
The end of the First Quarter is October 14, 2011. Report Cards go home on October 21st.
First Penance is on November 29, 2011. A pamphlet will go home every week for the next 8 weeks focusing on First Penance. Please take the time to read the pamphlets with your child. In class we will begin talking about the Ten Commandments and making the right choices.

Dear Parents,
We made it through the ITBS Testing week. Thank you to the parents who brought in snacks and water.
We will go back to our regular schedule. The story for the week is The Sun Is Always Shining Somewhere. Homework for Monday will be to read the story and write Vocabulary definitions. Spelling homework for Monday is to write the words 5 times each. My homework assignments, especially for Spelling are pretty routine. So if on a night when there is not very much homework work on the Spelling homework for the following night. The homework that I assign in Spelling is helping your child with Handwriting and also learning to spell the words for the week. It is also helping him/her spell other everyday words when they write sentences. The Vocabulary definitions are helping your child learn the Vocabulary words as well as the definitions because they are throughout the story, in the Practice Book pages and also on the Reading Assessment. Completing homework assignments are a way for your child to be responsible. Being a responsible citizen is something we are always learning.
On Wednesday, September 28th at 6:00 p.m. in the school auditorium there is a Safe Environment meeting. Those parents who are interested in driving students to off campus activities or volunteering at the school must attend the meeting. Mrs. Feehan will conduct the meeting. She will give you all the necessary information regarding finger printing and the needed paper work.

Dear Parents,
This is ITBS Testing week, September 19th through 23rd. Please make sure that your child gets plenty of sleep. Each test will run around 15 to 20 minutes. They will take 3 test a day which will be given in the morning. We usually finish around 11:00 or 11:30 a.m. In between each test we get up and excercise. Regular classwork is scheduled for the afternoon. Please keep in mind that the ITBS is not part of your child's grade. It is a test that gives the teachers a better understanding of how to help your child.
We are not reading a story for the week, so that means no Vocabulary Words. No Spelling Words this week. There is Math homework though, and probably some reading.

Dear Parents,
It was fun to see you at the Foundation Wine and International Food Event. My daughter Marsha was home for the weekend and also attended the Wine and Food Event. She thought it was a fun evening. She enjoyed visiting with some of her former teachers and parents of some of her classmates.
Progress Reports go home on Friday, September 16th. Keep in mind that this is only a Progress Report and not a Report Card. There is always room for improvement.
Next week September 19th through the 23rd is the ITBS Testing. Please make sure that you schedule all appointments for your child in the afternoon and not in the morning during Testing Week. Thank you.
The story for the week is Carry Go Bring Come. This story is a little long. While listening to your child read aloud, stop and ask questions, talk about the characters, make some predictions about what might happen next. On Monday along with reading the story for homework are the Vocabulary words and Spelling Words.
On Friday, September 16th, the Second Graders need to bring in a lunch for St. Vincent. Please explain to your child the importance of bringing in the lunch for St. Vincent. I always tell the students that this is our way of helping someone who does not have any food to eat. Thank you.

Dear Parents,
I hope you and your family are enjoying the day off. The story for the week is Henry and Mudge. The story is not very long. Have your child read Henry and Mudge and also the Small Reader which will come home on Tuesday. Homework for Tuesday, will be Reading, Vocabulary words and Spelling words. On September 7, and September 8, pictures will be taken at school. We usually have our pictures taken on the first day which is September 7 if things are running smoothly with the photographer. The Wine and International Food event is on Saturday, September 10 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. On Friday,September 9, 2011 after Song Practice OLM school is having a Prayer Service in remembrance of 9-1l. Dear Parents,
It was good to see a lot of the parents at the Open House. I hope you enjoyed yourself.
The story for the week is "Luka's Quilt". Your child's Reader will go home on Monday. Have your child read the story aloud. The story is quite long so have some patience while your child is reading. Vocabulary words will go home on Monday. Write the definition for each word using the Glossary in the back of the Reader. Spelling words will also go home on Monday.
On Tuesday, August 30 there is FREE DRESS for $1.00. The money collected on this day will be donated to the SPCA in memory of Lancey. Keep in mind that the Free Dress should be appropriate.
September 2, 2011 is a half day of school, dismissal is 12:30 p.m. We also have a mass on Friday, September 2 at 8:15 a.m. On Monday, September 5, is Labor Day a school holiday.

Dear Parents,
The first week of school went pretty good. We did a lot of reviewing, especially in Math. We played a Math game using Flash Cards. Some of the students need to work on their Math Facts. We will continue to play Math games in order for the students to get faster with their math facts.
We did some reading aloud in class. Some of the students are reading a little slow and real choppy. On the days when there is no reading homework assignments please have your child read aloud for 10 to 15 minutes. Encourage your child to read for pleasure. When you and your child are reading together stop and ask your child questions. Make sure he/she understands what is going on in the story.
Homework starts on Monday, August 22. Your child's Reader is going home. Have him/her read the first story "Charlie Anderson" aloud. On Tuesday, on the chalkboard I will have 3 Comprehension questions. They will have to copy and answer them. This lets me know who understands the story and who does not. On Wednesday I will have 3 more questions that they will have copy and answer. Along with the Reading homework there is Vocabulary homework. There are 8 Vocabulary words. These words are from the story. Vocabulary words are not Spelling words. The students needs to write the Vocabulary words and the definitions for each of them using the Glossary in the back of the Reader. I will show the students how to do this. We will do one Vocabulary word in the classroom.
The Spelling List is also coming home on Monday. The words will be written in their Planner.
Please check your child's homework for mistakes. All homework should be done in their best Handwriting. I will give your child a Handwriting grade on their Spelling homework assignments.
REMEMBER THE OPEN HOUSE IS ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 28, 2011.

Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a good day off from school on Friday. Regular Spelling homework. Monday 5 times each; Tuesday ABC order; Wednesday choose 6 words and write Dictionary definition; Thursday write a sentence for each word. A Math test on Chapter 2 will be on Friday, October 15. I will send completed Math papers home with your child on Tuesday so you can help your child study for the test. The end of the First Quarter is on Friday, October 15. Report Cards will go home on Friday, October 22. Beginning Monday, October 18 there will be 14 spelling words.
Your child brought home his/her Science Animal Book. I explained to the students that the book was worth 25 points. I read every definition. I took into consideration the spelling, handwriting, neatness, art, and definition in determining the grade for the book.
The Second Graders will be in the Fall program. The program will be on November 10 at 6:30 p.m.

Dear Parents,
We have a short week of school this week. The teachers are going to an In-Service in Visalia on Friday, October 8. The Spelling homework for this week will be, Monday, 5 times each, Tuesday, ABC order, Wednesday, choose 6 Spelling words and write Dictionary definition and on Thursday is the Spelling Test. There will be homework on Thursday. Your child will have Small Reader and probably some Math.
The end of the First Quarter is on October 15th. Report cards will go out on October 22.
Your child brought home the Act of Contrition. Please help your child memorize this prayer. We will be saying this prayer everyday before we go home from school to help with the memorization.
Some of the parents have been concerned about their child's grade in Social Studies and Science.
Papers that I use to determine a Social Studies grade are from a Homework and Practice Book. They go home in the stapled packet with a percentage grade on the right hand corner. In determining the grade I look at the answers, the spelling and the neatness of the coloring.
For Science I do the same thing. Some of the papers for Science are ,looking at a flower, plants, anatomy of an Ant, and going home this week is Life Cycle of a Butterfly. I look at the answers, are the words spelled correctly, and the neatness of the coloring. All of these papers have a percentage grade on them. If a paper in any subject has a percentage grade on it I have entered it in the Grade book.

Dear Parents,
Second Grade made it through testing. The cheering after the last test on Thursday told me that your child was just as happy as I was that ITBS was finished. The results should be back for Conferences at the end of October.
In Religion we are starting to prepare for First Penance. We will be discussing the love that God has for us even when we choose to do the wrong thing, saying we are sorry for what we have done and forgiving others who have wronged us. I will be sending home a copy of the ACT OF CONTRITION for your child to memorize. I will also be sending home a pamphlet every week for 8 weeks starting next week. The pamphlets will forcus on First Penance and will have an activity or two for you and your child to do.
We will go back to our regular Spelling and Vocabulary homework this week.

Thank you for sending the St. Vincent's lunch on Friday. I explained to the second graders that bringing in a lunch will give someone in Merced something to eat.
On Monday September 20th is the beginning of the ITBS testing. I have scheduled 3 tests a day. We only test in the morning. The afternoon will be regular class assignments. I hope your weekend is going well. I saw a few of you at the International Wine and Food Event. What a nice evening. Weather was great and the food was even greater.
There is a Math test on Thursday on Chapter 1. I am sending home some math papers that will be stapled together. These papers were class assignments. Please use these papers as study sheets for the Math test. Review with your child, especially the ones that he/she missed.

Progress Reports go home on Friday, September 17, 2010. This report is part of the ongoing communication between school and home in terms of the current progress. If some of the grades are low there is still time to bring them up. The end of the First Quarter is October 15, 2010. Don't try to determine your child's academic future on this First Progress Report.

The ITBS Test is on September 20 through September 24, 2010. Please make sure that your child gets plenty of sleep on these days. Second grade will have 3(three) test a day.

Dear Parents,
I hope everyone is having a wonderful Labor Day. I know I am. The homework assignments for Spelling and Reading are little different this week, due to the short week. The students will be reading the story of the week which is Henry and Mudge (a short story) on Tuesday and also a Small Reader, the one in the manila envelope. The reason for this is, so they will not have any homework over the weekend. A Small reader will come home on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Spelling homework will be; Tuesday, write each word 5 times, Wednesday write words in ABC order, Thursday choose 6 words and write Dictionary definitions. There are no Spelling sentences this week.
If any of you parents are interested in driving or volunteering in the classrooms, there will be a Safe Environment meeting on Tuesday, September 7 at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Pictures are this week, Wednesday , September 8, and Thursday September 9.

Dear Parents,
It was wonderful to see so many of you at Open House. I hope you enjoyed visiting the classroom and looking at your child's work. Several of you asked about the Spelling Homework. On Monday the Spelling words are written 5 times each. On Tuesday the Spelling words are written in ABC order. On Wednesday the children are to choose 6 of the Spelling words and write their definition using a Dictionary. On Thursday a sentence is written for each Spelling word. On Friday is their Spelling test. The Spelling words are written in their Planner.
On Monday, August 23, your child started taking Timed Test. They started with 0 and 1. This week we are working on the 2's. There are 100 problems on the page. I start off by giving them 8 minutes to complete the page. We work our way down to 5 minutes for 100 problems. We also play relay games using the Flash cards in the classroom. Please work with your child at home by using Flash Cards to help him/her memorize the Math facts.

Dear Parents,
The first week of school went pretty good. I have concerns about some of the students. Please check their Planner for a note regarding this. The children have been asking about their first homework assignment. On Monday, August 23,2010 will be their first assignment. A Letter will be sent home regarding homework. They will have Reading, Vocabulary and Spelling. Please check their Planner and sign it in the Religion box. I have listened to some of the children read aloud in class. Some of the children are reading a little slow. On the days when there is no reading homework assignment have your child read aloud for 10 to 15 minutes. Encourage your child to read for pleasure. This will help with the reading fluency.
Please check their homework for mistakes. If your child has trouble understanding something, help them.
All homework should be done by the student. I expect to see their best work. In the past I have given a Handwriting grade on homework assignments.
